ISO 14064 Greenhouse Gas (GHG) validation and verification
Earn credibility through carbon footprint verification.
Measure, manage and verify your GHG emissions with confidence
An increasing number of organisations are choosing to monitor, report and reduce their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as part of a proactive approach to climate action. ISO 14064 provides a recognised framework for quantifying, managing and reducing emissions, helping you strengthen your sustainability credentials and demonstrate transparency to stakeholders.
LRQA was among the first verification bodies to achieve accreditation to ISO 14064, enabling us to deliver accredited verification across the full Part 1 scope. Our independent assurance helps you build trust, meet regulatory or voluntary commitments, and turn climate ambition into measurable results.
ISO 14064 part 1 - Quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals
Specifies principles and requirements at the organization level for quantification and reporting of GHG emissions and removals. It covers design, development, management, reporting and verification of an organization’s GHG inventory. Contact us to find out how LRQA can support you with ISO 14064-1.
ISO 14064 part 3 - Validation and verification of GHG assertions
Specifies principles and requirements and guides those conducting or managing the validation and/or verification of GHG assertions. It can be applied to organisational or GHG project quantification, monitoring and reporting. Contact us to find out how LRQA can support you with ISO 14064-3.

ISO 14064 Verification - Effective Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions H2
Organisations and event owners increasingly seek credible ways to quantify, report and demonstrate performance against their greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Internationally recognised frameworks such as the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064 provide structured methodologies to support transparent carbon footprint reporting.
While the GHG Protocol is widely used as a reporting framework, ISO 14064 is an international standard that defines requirements for the quantification, reporting and independent verification of greenhouse gas emissions and removals.
Independent verification enhances the reliability of reported emissions data and strengthens stakeholder confidence. It provides assurance that your GHG statement has been prepared in accordance with defined criteria and is free from material misstatement.
From Quantification to Verified Claims
Managing greenhouse gas emissions typically follows a structured pathway:
1. GHG Quantification (ISO 14064-1)
Greenhouse gas emissions are calculated in accordance with recognised methodologies such as ISO 14064-1 or the GHG Protocol. This includes:
· Defining organisational boundaries
· Identifying emission sources and removals
· Applying consistent and transparent calculation methods
· Establishing a defined reporting period
The result is a structured greenhouse gas statement that provides a clear and traceable record of emissions.
2. Independent Verification (ISO 14064-3)
Under ISO 14064-3, an independent verification body assesses whether the reported GHG information:
· Is complete and consistent
· Is prepared in accordance with applicable criteria
· Is free from material misstatement
Verification may be conducted at a limited or reasonable level of assurance and results in a formal verification statement covering the specified reporting period.
3. Emission Reduction Management
Verified emissions data provides a robust foundation for developing and monitoring emission reduction strategies.
While ISO 14064 does not prescribe specific reduction targets, it enables organisations to:
· Track emissions over time
· Evaluate reduction initiatives
· Demonstrate transparent progress
· Support internal and external climate reporting
4. Carbon Neutrality (ISO 14068-1:2023)
Organisations seeking to achieve carbon neutrality may apply ISO 14068-1:2023, the international standard defining requirements for carbon neutrality claims.
This typically includes:
· Quantification of greenhouse gas emissions
· Implementation of a structured emission reduction plan
· Compensation of remaining emissions through credible carbon credits
· Transparent reporting and independent verification
ISO 14064 verification can provide the quantitative foundation for a neutrality strategy, while ISO 14068-1 governs the requirements for making a carbon neutrality claim.
ISO 14064: Effective Management of Greenhouse Gas Emissions
There are several globally recognized standards and guidelines to help organizations and events calculate their carbon footprint. These standards are supported by public and private institutions. Examples include the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064, among others.
The objective of the verification is to provide independent assurance on the greenhouse gas emissions information presented in the emissions report. This ensures that the information is complete, accurate, transparent, and free from significant discrepancies.
The process of calculating and verifying the carbon footprint of an organization or event can be classified into several categories:
- CO2 Calculated: The carbon footprint is determined using internationally recognized standards, with verification rights granted annually.
- CO2 Reduced: The carbon footprint is calculated based on global standards, and the organization must demonstrate the efforts made to reduce its emissions over time.
- Offset CO2: The carbon footprint is calculated using internationally accepted standards. COâ‚‚ emissions are then offset through carbon credits—such as Verified Emission Reductions (VERs) and Certified Emission Reductions (CERs)—sourced from recognized carbon credit programs.
- Carbon neutrality: The carbon footprint is calculated according to international standards, and emissions reductions are achieved through a targeted carbon management plan. Remaining emissions are offset through verified mechanisms. The current standard for this category is ISO 14068:2023.
Benefits of ISO 14064
Integrity Control: Verification under ISO 14064-1 and ISO 14064-2 involves reviewing an organization’s systems and processes. This ensures that greenhouse gas inventories, statements, and reports are free from errors, omissions, or misstatements. If so, the systems and processes comply with ISO 14064.
Achieve your goals: Validation under ISO 14064-2 establishes the integrity of your project baseline, design plan, and supporting assumptions. This ensures that the planned greenhouse gas emission reductions can be achieved as intended.
Guaranteed success: Verification according to ISO 14064-1 provides the necessary assurance that your carbon footprint statements are accurate. Validation of greenhouse gas projects according to ISO 14064-2 provides assurance that the project—if implemented as planned—will contribute to achieving the planned emission reductions. Verification of your greenhouse gas projects assures your stakeholders of the magnitude of your emission reductions over a specific period.
